Google Chrome: its google’s first step to cloud computing

So I caught a wift of google intention to release a new browser. From what I see it appears to be a java based app that integrates with google's services. After blazing through the stupidly long comic I can only assume its the first step to google's cloud computing model. If all  goes well I guess it wont be long unitll you can buy a netbook that pretty much only runs the chrome browser for a few hundred dollars.  now they just need to soft out offline acces to gmail, docs and youtube ....

Unix Training

Right now I have started my quest to learn unix,  Specifically solaris 10. I have already completed my unix fundamentals and was amazed at how a few folders and structures seem like windows , specifically once you start digging around the system 32 folders and other dark areas. Anyways long story short I am going to start brain dumping interesting bits and bobs into this blog for future referance.

Eee pc 901 review part 3

Today I threw the default eee OS back on the eee, I found the system to be very intuitive and easy to use. I was able to do basic things like create documents and play movies without needing to install any other software. Overall I would guess that the preinstalled apps would cover most people needs.

The one thing I really missed was the typical start menu style I was accustomed to, however I didn’t have to look far to find out how to enable the start menu.  You can find out here http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:icewmstartmenu

Battery life under linux seems longer but I don’t have any stats to prove this. If I had much more time with this machine I would be inclined to test Ubuntu on it.

EEE pc 901 review Part 2

I have been using the eee most of the weekend now and must say that I am very impressed with its performance. Start up time is around 25 seconds and shutdown is around 12 , remember this is a fresh install of XP and no other mods have been done which could reduce this time even further.
The first thing I have noticed with using the eee are the buttons around the touch pad are rather hard to press. I can only assume its to prevent accidental clicks when you use the keyboard but you do start to get use to it,  as a added feature its equipped with a multi touch trackpad. Keyboard wise its pretty small, I would imagine touch typists would quickly throw the eee across the room in a fit of rage within hours of using a keyboard this small.
Performance wise I found the eee to have plenty of resources for almost any day to day task. I found battery life to be outstanding; I managed to watch 3.5 hours of avi’s streamed over wireless with brightness and volume at max without any problems and still had about 30 minutes of runtime remaining. If you were to optimize the settings a little better you should get about 5 hours without much trouble at all.

EEE pc 901 review Part 1

eee_901_front.jpg

I have been lucky enough to have been lent a 901 to check out. This unit came with a gig of ram and a 20 gig SSD also currently running windows xp. For Part 1 of this review I will focus on the physical aspects of the machine.

First impressions. Wow this thing is small. The most notable difference for me over the 700 was the screen. No longer are there silly speakers on the side which made the screen look smaller, this machine looks like a proper laptop with a nice bezel around the screen.  This model is also gloss black which does show up fingerprints and marks but is easily wiped clean.. The eee also comes with a nice neoprene satchel which has the effect of taking care of those fingerprints most of the time.

IO wise on the left side the eee has lan, 1 usb and standard 3.5 mm speaker and mic jacks. On the right side we have power, vga out, 2 more usb ports and spring loaded mmc sd card reader. For me this was important as the SD card sits in snugly allowing it to stay put and not get bumped or catch on anything.

My First HDR

img_4064_4.jpg

Last week I was lucky enough to have a quick play with a juicy eos 40d. I had wanted to give HDR a go for a while so when the chance came up I could not resist. This a quick shot without a tripod, Two exposures 2 stops apart then processed with photomatix.

Gartner analyst predicts mice demise… My money is you’re WRONG

computer_mouse_using_a_real_dead_mouse_3.jpg

This really looks like one of those controversial topics that some one comes up with purely to generate some press, and its working. So lets see how he justifies his claims.

"The mouse works fine in the desktop environment but for home entertainment or working on a notebook it's over"

Well you're kinda rights there but I know allot of laptop users who cannot manage touchpad's and lug around mice. If you think this is rare check out logitech's nano cordless mice

"You've got Panasonic showing forward facing video in the home entertainment environment. Instead of using a conventional remote control you hold up your hand and it recognises you have done that,"

Well technology would have to be pretty advance  to distinguish between purposeful actions and Aerobics.

"You even have emotive systems where you can wear a headset and control a computer by simply thinking and that's a device set to hit the market in September."

Dave, what are you doing Dave ... Consumers will not like the idea of this. Its invasive and most people will think it could probably put ideas back into their heads.

I love watching the computer interaction field and some of the innovation like multi touch is amazing but generally this technology will not replace the cost effectiveness of a simple mouse.

EEE 900 VS 1000 what’s the difference ?

eee-1000.jpg

So with the success of the 700 and 701's followed with the 900 and intel atom based 901 Asus bring us what the consumers have been asking for... MORE or have they? the EEE 1000 is basically the same specs as the 901 but with a  slightly bigger 10" screen, much bigger 40 gig ssd HDD, up to 2 gigs ram. battery life is reported to be a respectable 4 - 8 hours. Price is $699 so I would really consider a full fledged laptop before committing my self to this.
