30 Days :Day 19

STATS! ok so the last few days I an feeling that Google analytics wasn't being straight up and now that suspicion is almost confirmed. On Wednesday I subscribed to a forum that was focusing on bloggers and online money making. from that forum i posted the url to my site, about a dozen people visited the blog and commented back on the forum however google only reported 5 hits ?

I guess this could be due to the way google counts these hits and some demographic groups may block specific "features "

The morel of the story is your stats are only a guide and not to focus on them too much.

People want to be part of something successful

Call it a hunch or a feeling, while building up this Blog I get the senses that it’s a up hill battle to a point then the brakes come off and boom, you have traffic. Something tells me that you somehow have to prove yourself to the masses first, once you do that and hit critical mass your site starts becoming self building gaining more reputation and more readers with less effort. Well at least that my theory.

30 Days :Day 18

Looking over some stats I discovered my technorati ran is now sitting at 722,143. this comes as quite a surprise as I hadn't focused on that score that much. As it turns out a few well placed comments on other blogs has contributed to this score , lets see if i can hit the 100,000 mark before the 30 days is up

Should computers have preinstalled OS’s ?

The last few years have been very exciting in the open source arena. Several Linux distros have come a long way from the early days when installing them required a weekend and access to another computer to guide you. Ubuntu , one of the most popular distributions is now simpler to install than windows, infact the more recent versions are designed to be installed on a windows box and will take care of reading your data off the windows partition and lay it out nicely in the Ubuntu OS.

An earlier argument for the windows camp was Linux didn’t support hardware all that well. I am not going to guarantee that installing Ubuntu is guaranteed to work perfectly out of the box but you need to remember that the prebuilt dell you may be using was probably designed for windows and had drivers preinstalled, Linux on the other hand tries to cram support of most hardware on a nice little DVD or iso and online repositories. The most interesting thing here was when I installed Ubuntu 7.1 on my HP dv100 and was notified as soon as I logged in that my battery may be broken. That explains why I was only getting an hour out of a charge. Strange windows didn’t have the smarts to do this.

Another fear people have when switching OS’s was having to learn how to use the computer al over. This cold be easily dispelled by playing with one of the many live CD’s which you can boot your computer off and have a play around to see if you like it. To be honest while things may have moved once your computer has been set up you get a sense that things are where they should be.

Finally cost , most windows versions cost between $150 to $1000 NZD  linux usually cost you a gig or two on your downloads which amounts to $20 to $50 depending on your isp plan the problem is if your buying a pc from new you usually don’t have a choice about the windows option and  are therefore prone to the Microsoft tax.

My Question is shouldn’t  we get a choice as to what OS we pay for?

30 days :Day 17

Right, so I am pretty sure I have most of the site organised and planned out. So how do I drive visitors to this site ? well yesterday I implement My Blog Log its a widget that sits on your site that displays the visitors to your site and also shows their pretty little avatar. now this is the best part, when your a member of my blog log , each time you visit a site that displays the widget your avatar get displayed on their site. curious visitors see your avatar and sometimes click it. Eventually they can click through to your site and this is where your visitors come from.

30 days :Day 16

Ok now I am back to full swing. One of the more overlooked aspects is the footer. In blogs this area gets a surprising amount of viewing since people read down like newspapers. You also find this is the area people are most likely to exit your blog so this is a great place to throw in interesting links such as comments, recent post’s and other link love.
