How to make a better laptop

with the experience I am getting with laptops and more importantly user I have figured out what would make the perfect laptop.

Create several distinct model ,

The desktop replacement. Big screen. Decent HDD 7200 rpm nice keyboard and lots of usb ports

The Traveler. Smaller screen ( small enough to open on the train or in a plane ) massive battery life

The Work horse. Much like the traveler but bigger. Screen can be seen in daylight. Screen reinforced with metal to prevent twisting and shock impact. Think Tonka toy tuff

But cheaper than a rugged laptop

  • Moving the air intake and exhaust from the bottom and sticking it on the back so you can use it on a duvet without it cooking.
  • Bigger hinges and teeth on the lids (people sometimes pick them up but their lids when open )
  • Lower the keyboard so the keys don’t touch the screen.
  • Take the video output off the fn key and set it up on a button. Also software showing each mode you’re in.

  • Having a flat surface to the screen so I can apply a protective film easily.
  • The option to run dual HDD in some models,
  • RF remote in the PCMCIA slot for presentations.

And the best kick ass service ever. 1 hour turnaround max for any laptop at any major city. of corse this would be a costly opt in but I think its a viable option for ceo's .

10 things to learn about being a dad

1. Maternity ward staff don’t care about you ( you caused them more work ) take your own food , infact pack a picnic basket.

2. Your kids are smarter than you give them credit for.

3. You cannot yell your kids back to sleep at 3 am.

4. The reason your parents tucked you in at night wasn’t to make your feel cozy . it was to stop you falling out of bed.

5. By my estimates each kid cost about as much as a wrx , ( initial purchase , fuel, repairs, insurance, rego, WOF... )

6. You are responsible for teaching your child about the world. No matter how tempting it is to say dogs are boys and cats are girls, it’s not a good idea in the long run.

7. People are very passionate about how to raise children, do what’s right for you not what other people are saying.

8. Plonking your kid in front of the TV for a few hours may be bad but its some times the only way to stay sane.

9. Take the time to see things from your child point of view. Smell flowers , watch the clouds, play in the water.

10. Its all worth it to come home at the end of the day to be greeted by little people who to them you’re the most important person in the world.

10.1 To kids a toilet is the perfect height to be a basin. Therfore its perfect for bathing dolls, washing hands, cleaning teeth and seeing what will flush. (toothpaste dosnt flush. it just sits in the bottom )

Spotlight on windows

This is a cool little app from Quest (same guys that brought out aftermail / archive manager) Its perfect for server monitoring and has really pretty applets to alert you to the servers performance. It’s not as much an enterprise level application as OPS manager and the like but none the less is still pretty jazzy and is the perfect program to run on a old machine logging server performance in your datacenter and placing the screen for the boss to see , and its free as in beer

Keeping you techie happy

You would think that paying your techie $70k + is the simplest way to keep them happy this isn’t a option for many places and this isnt really a option for alot of businesses.  so I have been thinking of what places can do to keep their good people.

  • Geeks love gadgets.. A nice new palm top or other random toys can buy their love for many months.
  • If you want the best you'r going to have to keep them up to date, magazine subscriptions and encouraging regular training events should be a must. Their success with their training is also a good kpi.
  • Time. Most IT staff work way outside their 9 - 5 schedule, give them a Friday appreciation day off evey few months.
  • Techies usally are very proud of their work, most people don’t even understand the sort of work they do. When they do some work to improve the system tell them how much better it is.
  • When they have done last minute work to fix one of your mistakes or save your ass , don’t just say thanks. take them down to the pub and shout a few rounds.
  • And don’t expect them to fix your home computer because you think we love that sort of thing, we don’t.
